Innovations in our scientific and professional journey

In an applied model for linking scientific research with industry, a strategic collaboration between the Faculty of Technology and Education at Beni Suef University, the Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage, and the Electronics Research Institute embodies a unique integration that combines academic expertise, industrial needs, and technological development in service of our food security and energy conservation

What if we could monitor the flow of millions of grains with extreme precision and instantaneously without the need to stop the production lines? And what if scientific research succeeded in reducing energy consumption and extending the lifespan of national silo equipment at the lowest possible cost, and with purely Egyptian hands and minds?

This challenge has already transformed from a research idea into a tangible, practical reality through a fruitful partnership with an integrated team that included:

- Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Elsayed Abdelbar Elzaaleek – Assistant Professor in the Department of Process Control Technology and Coordinator of Special and Distinguished Programs at the Faculty of Technology and Education, Beni Suef University.

- Dr. Eng./ Taha Ahmed Anani – Director of the Maintenance Department at the Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage, and a faculty member assigned to training in technological programs at the Faculty of Technology and Education, Beni Suef University.

- Asst. Prof. Dr. Amir Yassin Hassan – Assistant Professor of High Energy at the Electronics Research Institute.

A decision was issued by the Board of Directors of the Holding Company for Silos and Storage to circulate it to all company sites, and actual implementation was carried out in 13 sites across the country, through the innovation and development of the project: “A smart gate to display the movement of grains and calculate their volume inside storage silos”, in addition to the application of an engineering system to rationalize energy consumption and protect mechanical and electrical equipment.

The innovative system relies on smart sensing technologies to track the movement of grains with extreme accuracy inside closed conveyor belts, and to convert real-time operating data into digital indicators that support decision-making and predict malfunctions before they occur, without the need to make any costly modifications to the existing silo infrastructure.

As a culmination of this joint scientific effort, the prototype of the innovative idea was successfully manufactured , implemented, and tested in the laboratory and in practice with the full support and sponsorship of the Electronics Research Institute. An official application was also submitted to register the innovation to obtain a "patent" in order to protect the Egyptian technological product and to confirm its scientific originality and economic value.

The experience was not limited to industrial development; its practical impact extended to college students through:

1. Linking graduation projects for students in the technology program to solving real-world engineering problems within silos, thus transforming students from recipients of information to active contributors to practical solutions.

2. Organizing regular scientific and field visits to the Kom Abu Radi silos to provide students with the opportunity to experience large-scale industrial work environments and connect the curriculum to the actual demands of the job market.

Project returns and practical value:

? Instant and accurate calculation of grain size and flow rates with almost zero error rates.
? Increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
? Extend the life of equipment and detect malfunctions early.
? Providing a local, low-cost, technological solution that is applicable and expandable in all silos of the Republic.
? Reducing manual burdens and human intervention in monitoring and accounting processes.

Herein lies the true value of scientific research; when it leaves  the laboratory to the production sites, knowledge is transformed into technology, and technology into a tangible impact that serves national industry and supports the pillars of food security.

Beni Suef University extends its sincere appreciation to the researchers and experts participating in this fruitful collaboration, in support of the innovation process, the transfer and localization of technology, and in confirmation of the university’s role in meeting the needs of Egyptian industry.
